Wine & Health
A moderate consumption of wine is good for you. This might
be an often repeated statement, backed-up as it is by research by
the most prestigious medics and nutritionists.
EIn scientific terms wine possesses certain components that act upon the plasmatic lipids (basically cholesterol, HDL), platelets and blood clotting that benefit cardiovascular protection.
With every day that passes further studies provide evidence that corroborates that a moderate consumption of wine is beneficial in keeping coronary disease at bay, and also carcinogens, diabetes, Alzheimer's
The most important thing is that moderate consumption and a balanced diet (the equivalent volume of 30 grams of alcohol a day) are advised in order to keep illness at bay.
It was in France, in 1992, that Serge Rénaud's research proved
for the first time, via his study of The French Paradox, that moderate
consumption is healthy. This research proved that despite a cardiovascular
risk similar to that of other similar countries, France had an actual
incidence far below expectations.
Professor Renaud arrived at the conclusion that wine reduces by 20%
the risk of cancer, infarction or cerebral vascular accidents. His
study took 20 years and analysed the health of 34,000 people between
the ages of 40 - 60 years.
The French Paradox and resveratrol have opened the gates of new research.
Still, it is difficult to forget the words of Hypocrites, father of
modern medicine, who stated that wine is an admirable thing, very
appropriate for men.
We should feel no guilt in accompanying our meals with wine. In modest
amounts it has always been a traditional element in our diet. We should
teach the young how to appreciate this product of the land. We should
awaken the dimensions that gastronomy can contribute towards. Knowing
how to drink is just another one of life's pleasures.
